Flywheel in Country Style!!

We are so excited to share that Flywheel features in Country Style this month, one of our absolute favourite magazines!  This is an extra special issue to our hearts as well as it is the Tasmanian issue, with loads of wonderful articles showcasing what is so unique about our island state.

A definite must issue if you are planning on a holiday to our island or for Tasmanians to discover lots of interesting places to see in our own home state.  Oh and also, our sister store The Drill Hall Emporium may pop up a few times in this issue!

Until next time,

The Agrarian Kitchen Cookbook

We are so lucky to be situated so near the wonderful Agrarian Kitchen at Lachlan here in the Derwent Valley, the farm-based cooking school.  Even more exciting has been the launch of their fabulous cookbook, already receiving well deserved accolades (winner of the Kinokuniya Cookbook of the Year Award no less!, a feature in Gourmet Traveller etc etc).

At Flywheel we were very privileged to print the invitations to celebrate the launch of this cookbook...

The much anticipated cookbooks all signed and ready to be much treasured..

to see all details be sure to visit The Agrarian Kitchen
A wonderful Christmas gift for any cooks you may know, unfortunately everyone in our family already has a copy!

Well done on a truly beautiful cookbook to The Agrarian Kitchen.

New Arrivals at Flywheel...

Well it has been a little while since our last post, and that is not due to much happening, quite the opposite!  We have had our new arrivals from our overseas buying trip come into the store, loads of new stationery products to literally drool over and beautiful printing coming out of the letterpress studio.  But, what better way to show some of our new goodies at Flywheel than some photos?

industrial storage locker, lamp & letters; Palamino pencils; new range of beautiful Mediovalis stationery and mahogany display cabinet displaying our vintage office treasures

pigeonholes; a more extensive range of Florentine wraps;  letterpress wraps (yes letterpressed!) and an office filing cabinet with drawers that come out like clipboards

new vintage styled notebooks, world map on canvas, leather notebooks & 2014 diaries
letterpressed invitations, baby arrival notices.. it is so exciting to share in these very special events with our work in the letterpress studio
We hope you enjoyed these images of what we have been up to, but it is looking even better in person of course....!

The great wall of Flywheel..

We had always planned to install a studio wall at Flywheel, to separate the studio and the store, and we are very excited that it finally happened last week!  We think it looks great, floor to ceiling with a simple almost industrial feel.  We are slowly but surely getting Flywheel how we want it to look...

We now really can't wait for all the latest arrivals from overseas to be in the store to really add some impact, but that is still a few weeks away, keep watching our blog or our Facebook page for our latest news...!

Winter Time in the Valley

This was the wintery scene that greeted us on the way to the store a couple of weeks ago.  The crisp air, misty trees, the stillness and crunch of the frost under our feet was eerily beautiful.  Winter in the Derwent Valley, Tasmania can be really beautiful, especially when the fog lifts to reveal the glorious winter sun in the afternoon.

Colour Inspiration: burnt orange

Mixing ink colours by hands is always an interesting exercise and sometimes we fall totally in love with a new colour.  This week is definitely the burnt orange colour that we printed some of our letterpress notecards.  Then you start noticing that colour in the studio and the store...

Vintage Shop Fronts

We love having an original vintage shop front at Flywheel.  Originally built for the town bakery, it has a beautiful timber frontage with large paned windows that we love creating different themed displays in, that are hopefully enticing to passing shoppers.

Here is just a few of our window displays so far....

origami display made from our gift wrap books

typewriter display

"Where in the World?" map and globe display

Mother's Day at Flywheel

more of our Mother's Day display...

Paris themed this week

We have discovered that we are certainly not alone in our love of vintage shop fronts.  We have just recently created a Pinterest page for Flywheel, where we can indulge in our favourite loves and inspirations, including divine vintage shop fronts around the world:

How visually enticing and delightful are some of these architectural gems?  Please be sure to check out our Pinterest page for more vintage shop fronts and our other inspirations, but be warned Pinterest can be very addictive!

Lovely letterpress bookmarks printed this week....

Our 1920's Chandler and Price printing press has been back in action this week with Rachel back from her overseas trip and straight into the studio.  These are the lovely bookmarks that she has been printing this week:

The lovely thick card has taken the impression of the type and patterns so beautifully.  The pattern was made using victorian era lead type patterns, so pretty! and the sayings so apt for book lovers.

Delving into Australian typographical history...

While some of the flywheel team are enjoying themselves in Europe on our buying trip, those still at home in charge of the store, have perhaps more simple pleasures to keep busy with!  One of those was the printing of our business cards, as they seem to disappear very quickly and the other, was finally solving a mystery surrounding our typeface for flywheel.

our new business cards, simple yet effective we think:
buffalo board, black ink & letterpress printed
 our lead type

As you can see we had our signage made to match our typeface as well:

We loved the idea of using our lead type for our signage typeface when we opened the store, as this particular type was in our first type cabinet that was part of the inspiration for flywheel.  We knew that our cabinet and type was Australian by the label F.T Wimble & Co. Ltd.  So it was with much excitement recently, that we found an original 1924 F.T. Wimble catalogue in a Hobart second hand bookstore and could finally solve the mystery of our typeface, in particular our very unusual "f".

So here we go, mystery solved: our typeface is a mix of Canberra Bold Italic with our "f" being Myola Italic:

Our only conclusion is that our "f" must have been mixed in with the wrong Canberra Bold Italic type in our cabinet at some stage, but it has made for our unique signage and business cards!

On looking through the remainder of  the catalogue, all the typefaces are named after New Zealand and Australian cities and towns, perhaps to give a more local flavour to the typefaces as they all seem to be based on other typefaces from overseas.

It was nice to see there was a typeface named after Hobart, quite a modern sans serif style, not really what one would think of for Hobart at the time perhaps?

So it would appear not a lot of typographical designing was going on in Australia, rather the re-naming of typefaces and we are still not sure what typeface Myola Italic was named after, so it would be great if anyone could fill us in!

Until next time,

Antique & vintage globe love at Flywheel!

We love globes here at Flywheel as you may be able to tell from walking past as one of our shop windows at the moment...

We have always thought that having one on a desk in a study is a great look, but some fabulous images we have seen lately has made us think that as a collection they look even better!  Less is more, but more is better definitely...

Hmm, beginning to think space needs to be made to fit a collection in at home.  This gorgeous English globe would have to be a favourite to start with... just love the ebonised base...

although this retro globe has a great style as well..

We may as well face it, we have a globe addiction at the moment!
